Zend Server User Guide

Overview

Zend Server is a complete, enterprise-ready Web Application Server for running and managing PHP applications that require a high level of reliability, performance and security - from the Zend.com Web site.

Zend Server is available in both a Community (free) and Enterprise edition. The Enterprise edition requires a license from Zend to take advantage of the enterprise only features.

Since the Enterprise edition of Zend Server provides access to the Community features without the need for a license, eApps is providing the Enterprise edition without a license so that our customers who wish to use only the Community features can do so, and those that want to upgrade to the Enterprise edition can do so easily. Please see the Obtaining and Installing a Zend Server License section below for more details. To see the differences between the Enterprise and Community editions, see the Zend Server Editions page.

Zend Server is only available on plans using the CentOS 5 or greater operating system. To see what operating system (OS) you have, click on the Subscriptions icon from the My Account tab of your Control Panel. Then click on the name of the subscription you want to see. The OS for the subscription will be displayed near the top of the page. If you are not on a CentOS 5 plan, but would like information on updating your plan, please contact eApps Technical Support for more information.

Please note – this User Guide is limited to the installation of the Zend Server from the eApps Control Panel. Due to the complexity of this application, please refer to the official Zend Server documentation for more information about how to configure and use the Zend Server.

Installing Zend Server

Zend Server Prerequisites

Zend Server will install PHP-5, Zend Optimizer, and Zend Framework, all of which are also available from the eApps Control Panel as separate applications.

If you have any of those applications installed, you will get a conflict error message when trying to install Zend Server. You will need to first uninstall those applications from the Control Panel, and then install Zend Server.

To uninstall these applications, login to your Control Panel, and click on the System Tab. If necessary, click the Select Another System (Subscription) link on the left and choose the correct Virtuozzo Container system.

Go to All Applications, and then click on the link for each application. There will be an uninstall button, click that button. You may get a warning about the application not being safe to install, just click OK and continue. Allow about 5 minutes for each application to completely uninstall before proceeding to remove the next application. Once the applications are removed, you can proceed with installing Zend Server.

Zend Server Installation

Login to your Control Panel, and click on the System Tab. If necessary, click the Select Another System (Subscription) link on the left and choose the correct Virtuozzo Container system. Go to Applications, and click on the Add Application link. Select the box next to Zend-Server and then scroll down and click the Next button.

This takes you back to the All Applications screen. Wait for five minutes, then click on the Refresh link at the upper right, just under the word Parallels. Zend Server should now show as installed. If it is still in a Scheduled state, wait another five minutes, and click Refresh again. If you see it in Error state, or it still shows as Scheduled, please contact eApps Technical Support.

Accessing the Zend Server Web Interface

The URL to the Zend Server interface is http://example.com:10081/ (substitute example.com with your own domain name). When you access this URL for the first time, you will be required to set a password.

The URL can also be found in the Control Panel. Login to your Control Panel, and click on the System Tab. If necessary, click the Select Another System (Subscription) link on the left and choose the correct Virtuozzo Container system. Then go to All Applications, and click on the link to Zend-Server. In this screen you will see the URL to the Zend-Server interface.

Obtaining and Installing a Zend Server License

To purchase the full Enterprise license for Zend Server, go to the Zend Server Store and select the license you wish to purchase. This is a significant expense, so please read all the supporting material carefully before making your decision.

Remember, you do not have to purchase an Enterprise edition license to use the Community edition features of Zend Server on the eApps hosting service. You only need to purchase the Enterprise edition if you need the features and support that the Enterprise edition offers. See the Zend Server Editons page link above for an explanation about the differences between the Community and Enterprise editions.

If you do purchase an Enterprise license, you can install the license by logging in to the Zend Server web interface, then clicking on Administration and then Update License section. Add the Order Number and License Key in the fields provided and then click Update License.
